WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — White House aides have been mulling military options in response to Russian-backed Syrian government operations in Aleppo, Reuters reported on Thursday, citing US officials.
"Syrians do not want to be invaded and dictated to by foreigners," Todd said on Thursday. "That would be worse than existing under the [Syrian President Bashar] Assad regime for all but a few Syrian opportunists who seek personal gain."
The death and destruction inside Syria is already bad enough, Todd explained, as a result of foreign interference by countries like Turkey and the United States, who have backed anti-government insurgents collaborating with the al-Nusra Front terror group.
"There is now arguably more blood on the hands of those like Turkey and the United States, who support violent insurgents in Syria, than there ever has been on the Assad regime's hands, and that includes the horrific massacre at Hama in 1982," Todd contended.
Todd also questioned "what on earth" White House officials were thinking when they began considering military options in Syria, given that such actions could mean war with Russia.
As a result, Todd added, recent threats to expand US and allied military action in Syria are "irresponsible, naive… and obscene."
Russia's support of the Syrian government may be the only action that has prevented the Daesh from establishing its own state "that would make North Korea look like Switzerland," Todd claimed.
In a phone call on Wednesday, US Secretary of State John Kerry told Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that Washington was prepared to stop cooperating with Moscow on implementing a cessation of hostilities in Syria.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said a lack of progress on a US pledge to separate armed Syrian opposition fighters from terrorists have hindered efforts to implement ceasefire agreements.
