Today marks the 15th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan by the United States and Britain. The start of what was called Operation Enduring Freedom came less than a month after the attacks of 9/11 and ushered in George W. Bush’s “War on Terror” that led to the U.S. occupation of Iraq starting in March 2003. But today the Taliban that the U.S. removed from power controls more territory in Afghanistan than it did in 2001, and almost 10,000 U.S. troops remain in the country. Will the United States ever actually withdraw from Afghanistan?
