US & Europe Preparing Sanctions Against Russia for Fighting Terrorism in Syria
MOSCOW (Sputnik) A senior member of the opposition Syrian High Negotiations Committee (HNC) Bassma Kodmani on Saturday urged the European Union to impose sanctions on Russia over its ongoing military campaign in Syria.

"The EU successfully sanctioned Russia over its role in Ukraine. It is also in Europe’s interest to pursue all options to end the catastrophe in Syria and its global consequences: the refugee crisis and terror threat. The EU must urgently impose targeted sanctions against Russian officials and companies directly involved in the indiscriminate targeting of civilians, civilian infrastructure, and medical facilities, and those financially sustaining the Assad regime," Kodmani said in a statement cited by the Anadolu news agency.

She also called for the establishment of the nationwide no-bombing zone in Syria.

On Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there was no reason for the introduction of new anti-Russia sanctions because of the situation in Syria since Russia "is the only state whose armed forces are in the Syrian Arab Republic on a legitimate basis, from the point of view of the international law."

On Friday, the German government's spokesman Steffen Seibert confirmed that Berlin was considering all options for the resolution of the crisis in Syria, including expansion of the anti-Russia sanctions.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition groups, as well as terrorist formations, such as the Islamic State and Jabhat Fatah al Sham (formerly known as the Nusra Front), both outlawed in Russia.

Russia has been conducting an aerial campaign against terrorists in Syria since September 30, 2015 at Syrian President Bashar Assad's request. Late in September, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated that Russia was taking all necessary measures to avoid civilian hardship in Syria amid an ongoing military campaign there.
