MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Saturday, Russia blocked the French draft UNSC resolution on the cessation of hostilities in Syria's northern city of Aleppo. The document received 11 votes in support, two votes against (Russia and Venezuela), while two more members of the Security Council abstained (China and Angola).
"The committee is in contact with the states supporting Syrian people, as part to these contacts the issue of discussing the [French] resolution at the United Nations General Assembly is being considered," Salem Meslet said.
Russia claimed that the French-drafted resolution would help terrorists in the Aleppo area by protecting them from aerial bombing.
A resolution proposed by Russia was also defeated as it failed to gain the minimum votes needed for approval.
