The United Nations does not anticipate any improvement in humanitarian conditions in the Syrian city of Aleppo, a spokesman for the UN secretary-general’s office said at a briefing on Tuesday.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – The UN Security Council has been unable to resolve the Aleppo crisis. On Saturday, the Council defeated two draft resolutions — one sponsored by France and Spain, the other by Russia.

“Obviously, we have not been able to reach the people who are in need of humanitarian assistance. I cannot foresee any improvement in the situation,” spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters when asked about conditions in Aleppo.

The French-Spanish proposal was vetoed by Russia, while the second failed to gain the minimum number of votes needed for approval.

Aleppo has seen intense fighting in recent months, with the Syrian Army and local militia forces encircling large groups of militants in eastern districts of the city.

On September 19, a UN-Syrian Arab Red Crescent convoy carrying humanitarian aid for the province of Aleppo was hit in a military strike, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The attack killed at least 21 people and destroyed 18 of 31 aid-delivery trucks.
