Daesh, which is outlawed in Russia, the United States and many other countries, has taken over large territories of Syria and Iraq, including Mosul, one of the largest cities of Iraq, since 2014, declaring a caliphate on the territories under its control and committing numerous human rights atrocities.

The operation has been widely criticized both by the Syrian Kurds and Damascus accusing Ankara of violating Syria's territorial integrity.
