WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Cyprus, part of the European Union since 2004, was divided in 1974 after Turkey invaded the island. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus proclaimed independence almost a decade later, and is recognized so far only by Turkey. Ankara still keeps troops in the breakaway northern part of the island.
"Nuland will travel to Nicosia, Cyprus, on October 11, to meet with Republic of Cyprus officials to discuss bilateral and regional issues," the release stated.
Nuland is also scheduled to speak with Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders and UN Special Advisor Eide to "convey continued US support for a fair and lasting settlement of the Cyprus problem," the release added.
