The Ukrainian delegation to Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) petition for removing from office President Pedro Agramunt is an attempt to make a scandal, Alexei Pushkov, the Foreign Affairs Committee chairman in the lower house of the Russian parliament said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, media reports emerged suggesting that the Ukrainian delegation was preparing a motion to call for removing from office Agramunt for his lenience on Russia. The Ukrainian delegation is reportedly worried by Agramunt's pro-Russian stance and his seeming willingness to lift the sanctions off Russia.

"The Ukrainian delegation to PACE intends to raise the issue of Agramunt's resignation because of his desire to return to Russia. The aim not resignation, but the scandal," Pushkov wrote on Twitter.

Ukraine May Urge PACE President to Resign Over Soft Position on Russia
Agramunt took office in 2016 and would normally remain president for one more year, but if the Ukrainian resolution gains traction, there could be a new election in 2017.

Russia has been absent from the PACE since the Assembly adopted a resolution in April 2014 barring its lawmakers from three key bodies – the Bureau, the Presidential Committee and the Standing Committee – over Crimea’s vote to secede from Ukraine.

Russia did not renew its credentials ahead of the Assembly’s 2016 winter session and made its return conditional on the full restoration of its delegates' voting rights.
