"High priority efforts must be aimed at achieving at least time-limited pause in hostilities for ensuring humanitarian support for people in Aleppo with water and food. For the same purpose, Foreign Minister Steinmeier talked with the Russian party in recent days. Stopping the airstrikes is a decisive condition to achieve that. That also could support the offer of the special envoy, who set the conditions for disciplined withdrawal of Jabhat al-Nusra," the statement said.
The statement said that Russia could show that it was really ready to put an end to the humanitarian disaster in Aleppo.
The German Foreign Ministry added that regional actors must also use their influence on the warring parties to ensure ceasefire in Syria.
The ongoing conflict in Syria has lasted for about five years. Since its beginning, it has claimed the lives of thousands of people and displaced millions more.
On October 8, Russia vetoed a Franco-Spanish draft resolution in the UN Security Council calling for cessation of all aerial bombardments in Aleppo. The draft received 11 votes in support, two votes against (Russia and Venezuela), while China and Angola abstained. Russia's rival resolution on Syria that urged a ceasefire but made no mention of halting the anti-terrorist strikes in Aleppo, also failed to pass, with four votes in favor and nine against.
