MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Death toll in a stampede, which occurred during a religious ceremony in India’s northeastern city of Varanasi, rises to 24, the number of injured is not specified, local media reported on Saturday.
Earlier reports emerged suggesting that at least 19 people were killed in the stampede.
According to the Times of India, the stampede took place when hundreds of supporters of Jai Gurudev were going via the Rajghat bridge.
Earlier in the day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the bereaved families and called on local authorities to ensure help to those affected by the stampede. He also said that the families of the victims would receive compensation of 500,000 rupees ($7,495).
