After the first round the elections, Homeland Union — Lithuanian Christian Democrats party was leading with with 42 candidates in the second round and the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union was in the second place with 40 candidates, whereas the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (SDP) had only 21. The Lithuanian parliament sits 141 members.

In the previous parliamentary elections in 2012, the SDP won 38 seats and was able to form coalition with three other parties, propelling Butkevicius to the prime minister position.
