"This is the wrong decision for London and the whole of Britain… A new runway at Heathrow will be devastating for air quality across London – air pollution around the airport is already above legal levels of NO2," Khan said in a statement.
The UK Transport Department announced earlier in the day its support for a new full-length runway at Heathrow, a decision it estimates will bring up to $74.5 billion in economic benefits and 77,000 local jobs over 14 years.
"I will continue to challenge this decision and I am exploring how I can best be involved in any legal process over the coming months," he added, calling on Prime Minister Theresa May's administration to ensure the funding for improved road and rail connections without hurting local taxpayers.
