WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The board cited Zubaydah's prior involvement in terrorist activity, including the likelihood he served as a facilitator for Osama bin Laden and his susceptibility to being recruited by extremist groups if he were released.
According to a US Senate report on the CIA’s interrogation techniques, Zubaydah was subjected to mental and physical torture, including waterboarding. He lost his left eye while in CIA custody.
"The Periodic Review Board, by consensus, determined that continued law of war detention of the detainee remains necessary to protect against a continuing significant threat to the security of the United States," the release on Thursday stated.
Zubaydah has not been charged with a crime during his 14 years in US custody.
