WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton maintains a lead over her rival Donald Trump in the traditional Republican state of Virginia just a week before Election Day, a new poll revealed Tuesday.
“Clinton leads Trump, 48 percent to 42 percent, among likely voters statewide,” the Washington Post-Schar School poll stated.
Antipathy toward Trump in the counties close to the US capital has helped Clinton’s overall advantage in the state, though the majority of voters across Virginia have unfavorable impressions of both candidates, the poll found.
Sixty percent of likely voters hold unfavorable views of Trump, while 57 percent have similar views of Clinton, according to the poll.
Trump’s strongest region continues to be the southwestern parts of the state, where he leads Clinton by a 56 to 33 percent margin. Clinton is strongest in Northern Virginia and the heavily Democratic communities outside Washington, DC where she leads by 43 points, the poll showed.
The US presidential election will take place on November 8.
