US Justice Dept. May Seek to Cover-Up Secrets of 650,000 ‘Weinergate’ Emails

The US Department of Justice may try to prevent any early embarrassing revelations leaking to the public from the "Weinergate" cache of 650,000 emails, some of which are related to Hillary Clinton, before the US presidential election, analysts told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — "My feeling is that in the next day or so the Department of Justice will say they are confident that the Weinergate emails have nothing new," professor of neuroscience and political commentator John Walsh said on Wednesday. "But they will not show us anything. Or what they do show us will be bogus."

The FBI is investigating a gigantic stash of 650,000 emails found on the private laptop of former US Congressman Anthony Weiner while he was being investigated for sending sex texts to a 15-year-old girl. Wiener is the estranged husband of top Clinton aide Huma Abedin.

Walsh expressed skepticism over the possible role in the investigation of US Assistant Attorney General for Legislative Affairs Peter Kadzik.

"The Department of Justice is ‘joining’ the FBI investigation into Weinergate. But the key thing is the leader of the Justice Department team is a very close friend of John Podesta who is Hillary Clinton's campaign manager. It should be made clear that with Kadzik in control, nothing can be believed," Walsh said.

Kadzik was the private lawyer for Clinton’s controversial campaign chief John Podesta 19 years ago, and in 2015 was instrumental in the effort to confirm Loretta Lynch — Kadzik’s boss — as US attorney general, Fox News reported on Tuesday.

Walsh emphasized the importance of exposing the Podesta-Kadzik relationship to the American public.

"If the Justice Department dismisses Weinergate, then it will not be credible if enough people know about it. Needless to say, it will not be headlines in the New York Times," he noted.

Ohio State University Professor Emeritus of International Law John Quigley said he expected the investigation of the emails to be a long one that could not be completed before the presidential election next Tuesday.

"To date… the FBI does not have sufficient findings regarding the new cache of email messages to say publicly what they may reveal," he told Sputnik.

Quigley also said he believed FBI Director James Comey announced the reopened investigation into the new email cache to reassure the public after mounting criticism on him for having previously closed it.

"Comey may have thought he needed to indicate publicly that the investigation into Ms. Clinton’s emails had been re-opened, because he had previously indicated publicly that the investigation had been closed," he said.

Opinion polls have shown Trump closing the gap with Clinton and taking the lead, a trend that was boosted by the reopening of the Clinton emails investigation announced by Comey last Friday.
