Despite this development, Sanders still agreed to endorse Clinton for US president, but lost many supporters who went on to join the Green Party nominee Jill Stein or even Republican nominee Donald Trump.
During Monday’s rally in Grand Rapids, Clinton explained that after the primary election the two contestants did not separate, but rather united in the pursuit of their common goals.
"I can't wait to roll up my sleeves with Debbie [Wasserman-Schultz] and Bernie [Sanders], and we are going to get to work right after this election, if I am fortunate enough to win," Clinton told her supporters on Monday.
In June, Sanders stated in an interview for CNN that he would make a strong effort to have his policies adopted in a potential Clinton administration.
