MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to official figures seen by the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper, 570 foreigners, or 72 percent of the 795 people found guilty of crimes committed in the Netherlands, were expelled in 2011. Most of them were from Morocco, Somalia or Iraq.
The number of successful deportations has neared 80 percent, or 4,810 people, in the past five years, the outlet said. This year alone, 870 criminals have been repatriated for committing offenses that ranged from burglaries and drug smuggling to sex crimes and murder.
The Dutch ministry tightened rules on foreign criminals, allowing the removal of convicts sentenced to jail terms of at least six months, down from 18 months. According to AD, State Secretary for Security and Justice Klaas Dijkhoff is seeking to extend the measure to criminals given suspended sentences or community service.
