Both US major party presidential nominees, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, have failed to address in their campaigns the basic needs of the American people, former Democratic presidential hopeful and US Congressman Dennis Kucinich told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The 2016 US presidential election has become famous for the scandals surrounding the candidates, such as Clinton’s use of a private email server for official use during her tenure as secretary of state, or Trump’s crude comments about women.

"This election is seen as an exercise of ignoring the basic needs of the American people in favor of an almost cartoonish low-level political sniping," Kucinich said.

Moreover, the candidates have focused too much on military spending and foreign conflicts instead of thinking how to improve living standards at home Kucinich noted.

"People cannot have pertained jobs, decent housing, education for their children, safe neighborhoods, security when they are retired and still good healthcare, clean air, clean water. These are aspirations that Americans have, and so do Russians," Kucinich stated.

The former presidential hopeful in the 2004 and 2008 elections also said the United States should not be put "on a path of wasting trillions and trillions of dollars" on conflicts and preparations for war.

Clinton has stated she wants to renew the US pursuit to dominate in the Middle East, to be more active in containing Russia and Iran, and establish a no-fly zone in Syria.

Republican nominee Donald Trump has said the United States should rebuild its replenished military from being engaged for years in conflicts, and should work closer with Russia in the war against Islamic State terror group.
