WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — CNN projected that in Illinois, US Representative Tammy Duckworth, a wounded veteran of the Iraq war, was on track to defeat incumbent Senator Mark Kirk, the website RealClearPolitics reported.
Duckworth was leading Kirk, 49.9 percent to 44.8 percent, with 1 percent of votes counted.
In New Hampshire, Governor Maggie Hassan, a Democrat, was leading incumbent Republican Senator Kelly Ayotte, 53.8 percent to 42 percent, with 9 percent of votes tallied.
Pre-election forecasts based on state-by-state polls showed eight Senate seats could change hands, giving Democrats a chance to take control of Congress’ upper chamber from Republicans.
