Syrian Opposition Group Welcomes Trump's Election as New President
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — US President-elect Donald Trump should cooperate with Moscow and Damascus if he remains committed to his election campaign pledges to work with forces seeking a lasting settlement of the conflict in Syria, Tarek Ahmad, a leader of the Hmeymim group of internal Syrian opposition, told Sputnik on Friday.

“Trump, if he does as he promised, will cooperate with Assad and Russia against IS, as they are only real forces that fight against IS on the ground…. I truly hope that he will do it. He said that he is ready to cooperate with any country that advocates a peace solution. That means that he will have to cooperate with Russia and Syria in solving the Syrian crisis,” Ahmad said.

Tarek expressed hope that Trump would focus on internal reforms in the United States instead of meddling into sovereign states’ business around the world.

“However, there are enough hidden forces in the United States that can put pressure on Trump to alter his policy preventing him from cooperation with Russia or the Syrian government,” the politician pointed out.

‘Change We Need’ in Syria From Next US President
During the election campaign, Trump has been advocating better cooperation with Russia, including on anti-terror fight and the Syrian crisis.

Tarek Ahmad also stated that Donald Trump should prosecute Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton for alleged support of terrorism during her tenure as US secretary of state.

“We hope that Mrs. Clinton will be punished and go to jail for her support of Daesh [Islamic State, outlawed in Russia] and of so many other terrorist groups. So many people have died in Syria and all over the world due to her policy. We count on Trump that he will put Clinton to jail as he promised,” Ahmad said.

He added that "during the first few months after the beginning of the Syrian crisis, Clinton, as foreign secretary, urged peaceful demonstration to take weapons and fight."

During the second presidential debate last month, when Clinton remarked it was “awfully good” that Trump was not in charge of the law in the country, Trump replied that she would be in jail over email controversy if he was.

Earlier in the day, Trump won the US presidential elections despite most of the analysts and opinion polls predicting his defeat to Democratic Party nominee Hillary Clinton. Trump got 276 electoral votes against Hillary Clinton's 218 votes out of 270 needed to win.
