WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — An audit of 25 schools in eastern Afghanistan’s Herat province that were either built or rebuilt by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), suffered from high absenteeism and a lack of electricity and water, according to a letter to the agency from Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction John Sopko, released Thursday.
The letter cited possible problems with student and teacher attendance and recommended further investigation by the Afghan government.
"We also observed that several schools we visited in Herat lack basic needs including electricity and clean water, and have structural deficiencies that are affecting the delivery of education," Sopko’s letter stated.
Otherwise, USAID will notify the Afghan ministry of physical and structural problems detected by auditors, the letter said.
