America's Brexit

The landslide victory of anti-establishment candidate Donald Trump stands to be an American Brexit from the old world order and the watershed event heralding in a completely new paradigm of the US’ international relations.

Conservative and anti-establishment voices such as Britain’s Teresa May and Hungary’s Viktor Obran celebrated Trump’s victory, while the liberal-dominated international Western media was in a state of shock and couldn’t believe what had just happened.

Some European voices had previously decried Trump’s campaign pledge to renegotiate the US’ economic and military partnerships in order to ensure a fairer deal for Americans, so it’s likely that they’re not too happy with his election and fear that they stand to lose some of their existing benefits if he follows through on his word.

On the other hand, Russia and China expressed cautiously positive optimism that Trump will practice pragmatic policies towards their countries, giving way for many curious possibilities that could unfold in the future.

Alexander Domrin, professor, Higher School of Economics(studio guest); Chris Shipler, independent political analyst, and Matthew Fisher, Foreign affairs columnist for Postmedia, Canada's largest newspaper group, and the Toronto-based National Post, joined us to discuss the issue.
