Washington and Brussels have long been discontent with Greece's close relations with Russia, prompting Militaire.gr to suggest that US President Barack Obama could tell Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras that Athens should refrain from allowing Russian warships to enter Greek ports and vote to uphold anti-Russian sanctions during his visit to Europe.

Obama is scheduled to be in Europe on November 15-18. His trip will begin with a visit to Greece.

Militaire.gr, a website covering military topics and politics, pointed to an opinion piece, authored by Luke Coffey, Director of the Douglas and Sarah Allison Center for Foreign Policy, and Daniel Kochis, policy analyst in European affairs at the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom. The article, titled "Greece: Vital Messages Needed on Obama's Final Trip to Europe," was published online by the Heritage Foundation.

Militaire.gr referred to the think tank as "the stronghold of belligerent 'neoconservative' foreign policy leaders in Washington," adding that it has mapped out the agenda of Obama's unexpected visit to Greece.

US-Russia Thaw Will be a 'Chance for Europe to Find its Place in the World'
The agenda, according to Militaire.gr, will focus on three key issues, including anti-Russian sanctions, Russian ships in Greek ports and Macedonia's NATO Membership.

Coffey and Kochis claimed that Athens was supposedly "out of synch with most of the rest of Europe" due to its cordial ties with Moscow. They urged Obama to "pressure Greece to vote for renewed sanctions," claiming it is "the right thing" to do.

The European Union has followed Washington's lead in placing and extending restrictive measures imposed on Moscow over its alleged meddling in the Ukrainian affairs despite the fact that Russia has not been involved in the civil war in the neighboring country and has made every effort to resolve the conflict.

US-Russia Relations to Improve Since Trump, Putin 'Clearly Respect Each Other'
In addition, Obama, according to Coffey and Kochis, "must be crystal clear that Greek support for the Russian navy is unbecoming of a NATO ally." They also said that the US president "should encourage Athens to follow Spain's recent example and cancel future visits by the Russian navy."

Coffey and Kochis apparently think that this is the message Washington should send with regard to Crimea's peaceful and democratic reunification with Russia, as well as Moscow's counterterrorism efforts in Syria.

Russia launched its aerial campaign in Syria in September 2015 following a request from Damascus. For its part, the US-led coalition has not been authorized to carry out anti-Daesh operation in the war-torn Arab country.
