Militaire.gr, a website covering military topics and politics, pointed to an opinion piece, authored by Luke Coffey, Director of the Douglas and Sarah Allison Center for Foreign Policy, and Daniel Kochis, policy analyst in European affairs at the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom. The article, titled "Greece: Vital Messages Needed on Obama's Final Trip to Europe," was published online by the Heritage Foundation.
Militaire.gr referred to the think tank as "the stronghold of belligerent 'neoconservative' foreign policy leaders in Washington," adding that it has mapped out the agenda of Obama's unexpected visit to Greece.
Coffey and Kochis claimed that Athens was supposedly "out of synch with most of the rest of Europe" due to its cordial ties with Moscow. They urged Obama to "pressure Greece to vote for renewed sanctions," claiming it is "the right thing" to do.
The European Union has followed Washington's lead in placing and extending restrictive measures imposed on Moscow over its alleged meddling in the Ukrainian affairs despite the fact that Russia has not been involved in the civil war in the neighboring country and has made every effort to resolve the conflict.
Coffey and Kochis apparently think that this is the message Washington should send with regard to Crimea's peaceful and democratic reunification with Russia, as well as Moscow's counterterrorism efforts in Syria.
Russia launched its aerial campaign in Syria in September 2015 following a request from Damascus. For its part, the US-led coalition has not been authorized to carry out anti-Daesh operation in the war-torn Arab country.
