MOSCOW (Sputnik) — China’s most wanted fugitive Yang Xiuzhu turned herself in on Wednesday and will face corruption charges at home after 13 years on the run, the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s spokesman said.
"On the afternoon of November 16, Yang Xiuzhu, a suspect of corruption and bribery, turned herself in after returning from the US to China," spokesman Geng Shuang confirmed at a regular press briefing.
The 70-year-old was on top of the nation’s "red notice" list of 100 most wanted fugitives on suspicion of embezzling millions of dollars during her time as deputy chief of a construction bureau in the Zhejiang province, the CCTV channel said.
She fled abroad in 2003 and sought asylum in several countries before coming to the United States in May 2014. Geng Shuang said Yang’s return was an important achievement of US-China law enforcement cooperation on fighting corruption.
