QAYYARAH (Iraq) (Sputnik) – Hashd al-Shaabi, the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces Shia militia, came close to the airport in the strategically important city of Tal Afar, controlled by the Daesh militants, and is prepared to carry out an assault on it, the militia said Wednesday.
"Today we have mopped up the whole territory in the outskirts of the airport. The Hashd units have already come close to it. Now [we] are getting ready to [carry out] an assault," the militia told RIA Novosti.
The city of Tel Afar is 50 kilometers (around 31 miles) away from Mosul and is on the strategic route between Mosul and Syria’s Raqqa, the Daesh stronghold.
Mosul has been occupied by Daesh, a jihadist group outlawed in Russia, since 2014. The operation to retake the city from the terrorists began on October 17.
