"We spoke very intensively of … developing cooperation with African countries on migration issues, that we must do everything we can to achieve a stable government in Libya. We discussed these issues at the bilateral meeting, as well as in talks with our other colleagues and Barack Obama, as well as the situation in Syria, Iraq and the fight against the Daesh group," Merkel told a press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.
The EU leaders and Barack Obama confirmed at their talks their commitment to the Normandy Four format on Ukrainian reconciliation, Merkel said.
"The US president and all of us said that we supported the Normandy format, close cooperation with the United States. We would like to see progress in the Minsk process, but unfortunately at present this progress is very insignificant," Merkel said.
The EU leaders and Obama did not discuss introduction of new anti-Russia sanctions in relation to the situation in Syria, the German chancellor said.
"We spoke in great detail first and foremost of the humanitarian situation in Aleppo which has to improve. We did not speak today specifically of sanctions against Russia in this relation," Merkel said.
Thousands of civilians are believed to be trapped in Aleppo without access to food, water, electricity or medical assistance as Syrian government troops and rebel forces continue the fight for its control.
Western countries accuse Russia of prolonging violence by giving air support to Syrian troops, while Moscow insists that ending the violence is only possible by cooperating with the legitimate government.
