MOSCOW (Sputnik) — US President-elect Donald Trump’s team is working on an immigration policy that may reintroduce screenings of people coming from terror-affected areas, a source in the know told US media Friday.
The source close to the policy-making process told the CNN television channel that Trump’s plan looked similar to former President George W. Bush’s National Security Entry-Exit (NSEERS), which ended five years ago.
Bush initiated the NSEERS program in response to the 2001 bombings by Islamists. It added more controls for people coming from "high-risk" countries, such as Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
The source was quoted by CNN as saying high-risk places of origin would be determined based on existing risks, and a complete ban on immigration from most dangerous countries was "something we're prepared for."
The outspoken Republican was strongly criticized while on campaign trail for suggesting a ban on Muslims travelling to the United States until US authorities figured what to do with alleged radicals among Muslim immigrants.
