WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Abadi launched the operation to retake Mosul on October 17, more than two years after it was occupied by Daesh militants.
"The Vice President spoke today with Iraq's Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to discuss the campaign to liberate Mosul and the broader campaign to defeat ISIL [Daesh] in Iraq," the release stated on Monday.
Biden praised recent successes by the Iraqi Security Forces and pledged continued US support for Iraq, including for its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Earlier on Monday, the first humanitarian convoys reached Mosul residents in the district of Zahra, where grocery stores have been closed since October, according to media reports.
