Russia hopes that the UK nationals could put pressure on the parliamentarians so that they understand the situation in the Middle East and the ongoing anti-terror efforts better, Russian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Alexander Yakovenko said Wednesday.

Supporters of Moscow's Syrian Operation Rally Near Russian Embassy in London
LONDON (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, Yakovenko met with the UK citizens rallying near the Russian Embassy in London in support of Russia's anti-terrorist campaign in Syria.

"I have told them [the participants of the rally] about the key points of the Russian approach to the fight against terrorism, about the problems that exist today. [I] have told them we have to stick together and fight and that we hope the people of the United Kingdom could put pressure on their parliamentarians so that they understand the actual situation in the Middle East better," Yakovenko told RIA Novosti.

The ambassador added that the Russian Embassy in London had received many letters, in which people were expressing their support for the Russian stance on Syria.

The activists who gathered near the Kensington Palace Gardens embassy building held banners proclaiming their support for Russia's anti-terror efforts in Syria.

Russia became involved in an anti-terrorist aerial campaign in Syria in September 2015 after a request from the Syrian government. The US-led coalition has been conducting a similar campaign since 2014 without Damascus' consent. The United Kingdom joined the coalition in late 2015 after its parliament backed such a decision.
