Is Hong Kong Still China? Xi Jinping Calls on SAR Leader to Maintain Stability
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Beijing accused Taiwan and Hong Kong independence activists of a joint conspiracy aimed at stirring up trouble in Hong Kong, local media reported Wednesday.

“Hong Kong independence activists and Taiwan independence forces have colluded in an attempt to stir up trouble in Hong Kong … We suggest Taiwan keep a distance from Hong Kong affairs and not disrupt the implementation of one country, two systems,” Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the State Council’s Taiwan Affairs Office, said at press briefing, as quoted by South China Morning Post.

Ma’s statement comes as a comment on the draft letter written by Hong Kong’s disqualified pro-independence lawmaker Yau Wai-ching to Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen. The letter, published by local media last week, urged the Taiwanese leader to support sovereignty of Hong Kong’s New Territories region.

Yau was disqualified by Hong Kong’s High Court on November 15 over refusal to take oaths and use of obscure language at the swearing ceremony of Hong Kong’s Legislative Council.
