Park Geun-hye: President With No Country

Park Geun-hye: President with No Country
Subscribe
Faced with mounting protests against her rule embattled South Korean President Park Geun-hye is considering her resignation which can lead to drastic changes in country's relations with North Korea and hamper US plans to deploy its anti-aircraft THAAD systems on the Korean peninsula.

The leader of one of the US' closest military allies has been embroiled in a bitter scandal after she was accused of giving improper influence to an unelected aide who is also thought by many to be a cult member. While some of her opponents welcome her latest signals to possibly step down, others claim that this is just a public relations stalling tactic and that she intends to either serve out the rest of her term or buy enough time to handpick a designated successor who won't charge her for suspected crimes.

For fighting the most intense political battle of her life and threatening to upend regional politics if she does in fact resign, South Korean President Park Geun-hye is our PERSON IN THE NEWS this week.

Boris Volkhonsky, Head of the Asian Desk at the Russian Institute of Strategic Studies (studio guest), Gleb Ivashentsov, Russia’s former Ambassador to South Korea, John Power, Irish journalist and writer, who lived in South Korea, and Bryce Swerhun, researcher, City University of Hong Kong commented on the topic.
