The election campaign began on September 9, and there are currently four officially registered candidates from all four parties: acting President Mirziyoyev from the Liberal Democratic Party, Deputy Parliament Speaker Hotamzhon Ketmonov from the People's Democratic Party, economist Sarwar Otamuratov from the Milliy Tiklanish (National Revival) Democratic Party, and Narimon Umarov, the head of the Justice Social Democratic Party.
According to the Uzbek constitution and the electoral legislation, the presidential elections are held on the basis of general, equal and direct suffrage by secret ballot.
The elections are considered valid if at least 33 percent of registered voters take part in the vote. The candidate who receives more than half of the popular vote wins the elections, but if none of the candidates gets the required number, a second election round is due to be held within two weeks.
