MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern congratulated on Sunday Green Party-backed independent candidate Alexander Van der Bellen on his victory in the presidential election rerun.
"I would like to wholeheartedly congratulate Van Der Bellen," Kern said at a press conference in Vienna.
According to the Interior Ministry, Van der Bellen is leading the Austrian presidential election with 60.4 percent of ballots against 39.6 percent received by his rival Norbert Hofer from the far-right Freedom Party.
Hofer has already conceded his defeat and congratulated Van der Bellen.
