WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier it was reported that Trump chose Sessions to serve as the next Attorney General and praised his legal work.
"I respectfully urge you to send a strong signal that your work as Attorney General, if you are confirmed, will be conducted with necessary impartiality and fairness by voluntarily recusing yourself from voting on your own nomination, and the nominations of your potential future Cabinet colleagues, when these votes come before the Senate," Blumenthal wrote.
Blumenthal noted that none of the six Democratic and Republican senators nominated and confirmed by the US Senate for cabinet positions since 1960 have cast a vote for their own nomination.
The recusal would ensure that Sessions avoids any appearance of "bias and impropriety," Blumenthal added.
Sessions currently serves as senator from the US state of Alabama.
