US citizens should be cautious if traveling to Mexico because of drug cartel-related crimes spurring throughout the country, the Department of State warned in a news release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The State Department stated that gun battles between rival drug cartels or with Mexican authorities occur in "broad daylight."

"US citizens have been the victims of violent crimes, including homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery in various Mexican states," the release stated on Thursday.

Americans have been killed in carjacking and highway robbers, which happened mostly at night on isolated roads, the release also noted.

The State department claimed there is no evidence that Americans are targeted based on nationality, but pointed out that drug-related crimes at tourist destinations do not mirror the same levels of crime reported in border regions or along major trafficking routes.

US government employees are prohibited from going to gambling establishments in the Mexican states of Coahuila, Durango, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosi, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, Jalisco, Colima and Nayarit.
