The ruling Chinese Communist Party has said that it is “seriously concerned” over the recent comments by President-elect Trump regarding Taiwanese independence. Trump has expressed his frustration at the One China policy, which has formed part of the diplomatic bedrock between Washington and Beijing since the early nineteen seventies. We speak to former diplomat, Gerrit van der Wees, and Professor Suisheng Zhao from the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver.
 
As the flow of refugees continues into the EU, tensions are rising between Eastern and Western member states over the relocation of asylum seekers, with Italy warning it will withhold development funding to Poland and Hungary unless they start taking their fair share. But can the EU reach a “common agreement,” or will the humanitarian crisis the EU face have to become worse before member states begin equally sharing the load? We speak to Amnesty International’s Head of European Institutions Office, Iverna McGowan.
 
Gambia has been left in an impasse this weekend as President Yahya Jammeh has refused to accept his defeat in the national elections. Both the international community and the Gambian people are calling for him to step aside and facilitate the smooth transfer of power to his victorious opponent, Adama Barrow. But will President Jammeh concede, or is the country on the brink of a long-term political crisis?
