WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — All new light-duty trucks sold in the United States would have multiple electronic crash-avoidance systems under a new regulation proposed by the US Department of Transportation on Wednesday.
"We are carrying the ball as far as we can to realize the potential of transportation technology to save lives," Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a press release explaining the rule.
Foxx said the technology known as V2V, or vehicle-to-vehicle, will provide 360-degree situational awareness on the road and enhance vehicle safety.
V2V devices would transmit data, such as location, direction and speed, to nearby vehicles up to 10 times per second, the release explained. Eventually, the systems would be installed in cars and joined with transmitters installed along highways.
The new rule published on Tuesday could take effect following a 90-day period for public comment, the release explained.
