GENEVA (Sputnik) — The Syrian government must protect the right to life of all civilians and militants who have laid down their arms in Aleppo, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Raad Al Hussein said Tuesday.
The United Nations claimed earlier it had evidence that Syrian government troops had been going door to door in the areas they captured, killing 82 people, among them 11 women and 13 children.
"The crushing of Aleppo, the immeasurably terrifying toll on its people, the bloodshed, the wanton slaughter of men, women and children, the destruction – and we are nowhere near the end of this cruel conflict … We cannot let this continue," Zeid said.
The Jordanian prince said Syrian authorities were obliged to provide medical help to those sick and wounded – civilians and fighters alike – and grant access to the besieged city to independent monitors from the United Nations or other external actors.
Syrian government troops are in control of most of the city, with only a small pocket of militants offering resistance to the overwhelming force backed by Russian aircraft.
