MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in December, it was reported that the French government had proposed to extend the national state of emergency in order to keep France secure during its 2017 presidential run.
According to the RTL broadcaster, the prolongation of the measure was adopted by 288 votes in favor and 32 votes against. The Senate is expected to consider this issue on Thursday.
France has been on high security alert since a string of gun and bomb attacks by Islamists killed 130 people in Paris on November 13, 2015. The state of emergency was prolonged until the end of January 2017, following a truck attack in the city of Nice, which claimed over 80 lives.
It will be the fifth extension of the state of emergency, which provides the security forces with extended powers during special operations.
