South Korea, US to Hold Talks on Nuclear Deterrence Against North Korea
14:13 GMT 14.12.2016 (Updated: 11:26 GMT 06.08.2022) South Korea and the United States will hold a meeting next week to discuss cooperation on efforts to deter North Korea's nuclear threat, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said Wednesday as cited by local media.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the Yonhap news agency, the meeting is scheduled to be held in Washington with top officials from defense and foreign ministries of the two countries, including South Korean First Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung-nam and US Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation Thomas Countryman.

The parties plan to outline the military and diplomatic measures aimed at putting pressure on North Korea to abandon its nuclear program, the news agency reported, citing the ministry.
In October, South Korea and the United States agreed to establish a high-level extended deterrence strategy and consultation group, which would include diplomatic and military officials of the two countries to facilitate in-depth consultations on the nuclear issue.
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula intensified in September after Pyongyang claimed to have successfully tested a nuclear warhead, having previously detonated a hydrogen bomb in January.
