WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The electronic countermeasure decoy is a radio frequency jamming device towed behind the fighter jet by a fiber optic cable designed to withstand the heat from afterburner exhaust.
"BAE Systems Electronics, Intelligence & Support/Electronic Solutions, Nashua, New Hampshire, is being awarded $19,667,739 to a previously awarded contract for… integrated defensive electronic countermeasures AN/ALE-55 fiber optic towed decoys for the F/A-18E/F aircraft," the release stated.
The contract stipulates the procurement of 253 full-rate production decoys and logistics and other support.
