Moscow believes a destructive approach of Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius stems the development of relations between the two countries, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia has repeatedly announced it was ready to restore a productive and mutually respectful dialogue with Lithuania, however, Vilnius prefers instead blaming Moscow for alleged aggressive plans and calling for a tougher EU stance on Russia.

"A destructive approach, constant striving of the Lithuanian chief diplomat for poisoning the atmosphere in the Russian-Lithuanian relations by casting in the negative vibes actually disrupts a perspective for their development and establishing normal dialogue with our Lithuanian neighbors," the statement read.

Russia’s relations with Western countries, including Lithuania, deteriorated since Crimea rejoined Russia in 2014. The EU has been accusing Moscow of meddling in the conflict in eastern Ukraine and has imposed sanctions against Russia which are in place until January 31, 2017.

Earlier this year, the Lithuanian Foreign Minister announced that Lithuania would impose new national sanctions against Russia if the EU decides not to do so.
