MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Answering questions from journalists at a press briefing, Karakayev said that both at present and in the short term Russia's Strategic Nuclear Forces would to the maximum meet the country's geostrategic and economic situation.
"With its global reach and enormous destructive power, and without requiring unbearable costs for maintenance, they substantially complement the capabilities of general purpose forces. In the current geopolitical situation the Strategic Nuclear Forces are the guarantor of the security of the Russian Federation and its allies, as well as the independence of its foreign and domestic policy," he said.
He added that all the necessary decisions to ensure the flexibility of development of missile systems to respond to all the threats have been taken.
"The key role of the Strategic Missile Forces in ensuring the country's security will remain until in result of technological progress or change in the nature of international relations the nuclear weapons lose their deterrent role," Col. Gen. Sergey Karakayev told reporters.
