"Today the European Commission is stepping up its response to the Iraqi humanitarian crisis by a further 25 million euros, bringing total EU humanitarian aid to 159 million euros in 2016," the press release said.
According to the document, the EU aid will be delivered to civilians in the areas involved in an active conflict and to those who are most likely to be affected by it.
The Iraqi operation to liberate Mosul, which was occupied by the Daesh, outlawed in Russia and many other countries, in June 2014, has been ongoing since October 17. The offensive is led by Kurdish Peshmerga fighters and Iraqi soldiers backed by the US-led anti-terror coalition.
Iraqi army and anti-terrorist units are storming Mosul from the northern and eastern flank, while the federal police are approaching the city from the east.
A number of international organizations have voiced concerns over the fate of the civilians either displaced or trapped by the offensive.
