The murder of the Russian Ambassador in Turkey shocked the world this week, along with the appalling terrorist attack at a Christmas market in Berlin. Where does this leave the West's anti-terrorism policy in general, especially considering their support of 'rebels' in Syria? And where does it leave Russian-Turkish relations?

Indeed, the horrific events of 19th December beg the question of whether the West is serious about combating terrorism, given its stance towards the conflict in Syria. They also raise serious questions when it comes to Turkey — can President Erdogan really be trusted? And at what level was the Turkish state involved in the shooting of Andrei Karlov?

On this week's episode John discusses the fallout from both events and the connection with the war in Syria, with Director of the Human Rights Center and academic, Professor Helen Fenwick, from the UK, and from Turkey, Abdullah Bozkurt —  journalist, author, and fierce critic of Recep Erdogan — based in Turkey.

Hard Facts is broadcast every Wednesday from Edinburgh, Scotland.  You can listen to other shows here.
