Depending on your point of view, the Russian Revolution of 1917 is either one of the greatest emancipatory events in human history, or one that ushered in a catastrophic and calamitous experiment in social engineering, leading inexorably to human suffering, immiseration, and famine on a monumental scale.

Such is the polarization that has long existed when it comes to this seismic world historical moment, one that continues to reverberate 100 years on.

Whatever your view of the Russian Revolution, there is no denying its magnitude and sweep, most evocatively summed up by the American journalist John Reed as Ten Days That Shook The World. It saw Russia’s poor and bedraggled rise up and sweep away the detritus of Tsarism, autocracy, and religious obscurantism into the proverbial dustbin of history.

On this episode of Hard Facts, John is joined by lecturer and academic, Professor John Callaghan, to pick over the history of one of the most important events in human history.
