A group of US Democratic senators in a letter to Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon asked him not return two Russian diplomatic compounds that were closed down over Moscow's alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — "Simply put, the Russian government has done nothing to deserve renewed access to these compounds," the senators said in the letter, as quoted by The Hill on Thursday.

"Since the seizure of these compounds, we are unaware of any evidence or assessment that the treatment of US personnel in the Russian Federation has markedly improved."

The letter was signed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and his colleagues Ben Cardin, Chris Van Hollen, and Kirsten Gillibrand.

In December 2016, President Barack Obama introduced a sanctions package that contains a measure barring access to two diplomatic compounds in use by the Russian Embassy in Washington and Russia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told Sputnik on Thursday that his meeting with Shannon next week may still happen despite the countries continuing to hold different positions on a number of issues.
