WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US-led coalition forces carried out 31 strikes against Daesh (outlawed in Russia) terrorists in Syria and Iraq on Sunday, including 15 near the Syrian city of Raqqa, the Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve said in a press release.
"Near Raqqah, 15 strikes engaged 13 ISIS [Daesh] tactical units and destroyed 18 fighting positions, two VBIED [vehicle-borne improvised explosive device] factories and a mortar system," the release stated on Monday.
In Iraq, nine strikes targeted Daesh near four cities including Mosul and Tal Afar. The strikes destroyed fighting positions, tunnel entrances, tactical vehicles, mortar systems and engaging four tactical units, the release added.
The US-led coalition of 72 nations is conducting airstrikes, ground-based and rocket-propelled artillery fire against Daesh in Syria and Iraq. The strikes in Iraq are conducted in support of the Iraqi government, but those in Syria are not authorized by the UN Security Council or the government of President Bashar Assad.
