US President Donald Trump's exchange with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a dinner at G20 gathering in Hamburg, Germany was very short and did not last an hour, White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a press briefing.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, the US media outlets reported that Putin and Trump had a second meeting at the G20 summit during a dinner organized for the heads of state, which lasted an hour. The informal meeting came hours after the two leaders met face-to-face for formal talks that lasted more than two hours.

"We were not following them around with the stopwatch. But it was a brief conversation and it was certainly not an hour," Sanders stated on Wednesday.

Sanders explained the conversation between Putin and Trump was a part of a social event. The spokesperson noted it would be awkward for the two leaders to have no verbal exchange at this type of gathering.

Moreover, Sanders said it is absurd to suggest that the conversation between Trump and Putin was some kind of secret.

Since Trump assumed office, US mainstream media have accused the US president's team of having ties to the Kremlin. The US president has refuted these allegations and labeled the media involved in these speculations as "fake news."
