WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US President Donald Trump at a rally in the state of Ohio said that he will terminate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) if the United States fails to get the right deal after negotiating with Mexico and Canada.
"We’re renegotiating NAFTA and if we don’t get the deal we want, we’ll terminate NAFTA," Trump stated on Tuesday.
The first stage of negotiations will be held on August 16-20.
The US Trade Representative said NAFTA talks should improve access for US companies to the markets of Mexico and Canada.
The NAFTA agreement has been in force since 1994, uniting the markets of the USA, Canada and Mexico. Trump has previously stated that the provisions of the document needed to be reviewed.
